What is School Counselling

School Counselling is one of the major branch counselling which intends to apply psychological and counselling theories and approaches to provide accurate and effective assessment, intervention and prevention (responsive services, individual student planning, curriculum, and system support) in the aspects of career, academic, and socioemotional developments of students.

Who are School Counsellors

School Counsellors are the professionals who adopt school counselling approaches and psychological theories to enhance students’ well-being, strengthen students’ mental health and potentials, be aware of students’ personal growth, needs, interests and tasks in their corresponding developmental stages.

School Counsellors work in kindergartens, primary schools, secondary schools, tertiary institutions and special schools. They play the essential roles in facilitating and promoting the implementations of comprehensive school counselling system in school settings through four main interventions, including counselling, guidance, coordination and consultation.

Services from School Counsellors

Responsive service, guidance curriculum, individual planning and system support are the fundamental duties of school counsellors. School counsellors provide individual and group counselling, strength-based, preventive and remedial services, and monitor students’ progress after intervention.

In the meantime, students need to learn life skills to develop their self-confidence through developmental guidance curriculum provided by school counsellors.

Furthermore, school counsellors guide students to plan their academic, personal, social and career development. Besides offering direct counselling services to students, school counsellors provide support and consultation to teachers and parents, manage and monitor the implementation of the guidance program.
